[Brief Introduction]

Gamma Knife is a state-of-the-art instrument that integrates the sophisticated techniques of medical imaging, stereotactic location, computerized calculation and customized contouring of focused high-dose radiation. It pinpoints intracranial lesions 3-dimentionally in very short time with exquisite accuracy; using computerized dose planning, it then delivers a highly concentrated dose of radiation to the target by focusing 201 beams of gamma rays from separate sources of cobalt60 on the same precise point. In a single procedure of less than an hour, the lesion is continuously exposed to a high dose of radiation. The dose is delivered in a manner that conforms precisely to the location, size and shape of the target, thereby destroying it while protecting the surrounding normal tissue. The invention of Gamma Knife allows the surgeon to operate on intracranial problems without opening the skull, which ushered in a brand-new branch of medical science-radiosurgery, as well as promoted the development of neurosurgery.

1) Vascular diseases: arteriovenous malformations (AVM)

2) Brain tumors: including acoustic neuroma, meningioma, metastases, hypophysoma, pituitary ameloblastoma, pinealoma, angioblastoma, trigeminal tumor, chordocarcinoma, glioma, melanoma, etc (preferably tumors no larger than 3cm in diameter).
