The Center imported a Leksell Gamma Knife from Sweden to offer a new option to Chinese patients with which intracranial lesions can be treated without opening the skull. Gamma Knife is a stereotactic radiosurgical instrument that destroys intracranial lesions using a single highly concentrated dose of radiation to the target by focusing 201 beams of gamma rays while sparing the surrounding normal tissue. With the development of Gamma Knife techniques and in order to provide better service to its patients, the Center invested over $1.2 million in May 2002 to replace the cobalt and upgrade the treatment system, as well as remodel the facilities. This will help shorten the treatment time and make localization more accurate so as to improve surgical outcomes. |
